Maui is a bit too large and the roads to winding to allow for a single-day full circle island trip, but you can do it over 2 days! Circle Haleakalā, the 10000-foot peak that dominates Maui’s skyline, starting or returning on the famed road to Hana. Then do another circle around the wet and rugged West Maui mountains, visiting iconic spots like Lahaina, ʻĪo Valley, and historic Wailuku.

Circling around Haleakala takes about 10-12 hours while the West Maui Mountain circle route takes between 7-9 hours.

FAQs – Answers From Maui

Do any tours go all the way around Maui (around both West Maui and Haleakala)?

There are no tours that would make that trip in a single session. There simply are not enough hours in a day to drive it all. The trip around Haleakala is about 12 hours, and then around West Maui is another 8 hours with stops. If you drive it straight without stopping for any breaks at all, you might be able to travel the entire route in about 10 hours.
Should we do Road To Hana or West Maui?

We prefer the road to Hana as it’s better set up for visitors with more stops, places to support the community, and great food options. We love having lunch out in Hana and getting back to the Westside to enjoy a spectacular sunset. For visitors who have already enjoyed the road to Hana and/or are returning visitors and want to get out to see something new, then the West Maui route is the perfect thing to do on Maui.
What is the most popular Maui tour?

Most visitors to Maui will, at one point, attempt the journey to Hana. There are two options to make this trip: the standard route, experiencing the rainforest in the morning or going around the backside (referred to as going in “reverse”) with its windswept open plains first. The most popular is to explore the rainforest in the morning, making your way around the island so you can see the sunset from Upcountry Maui at the end of the day.
Do any of these tours include a visit to the summit of Haleakala?

Unfortunately, the summit will need to be visited on a different day. You will want to devote an entire morning or afternoon to enjoy Haleakala National Park and going to Hana or rounding West Maui on the same day will be too much.
